Outdoor Entertaining

Tips to ensuring your party is a success!

Spring is supposedly here, and that means that summer won’t be too far behind. My favourite thing about this time of year is being able to entertain friends outside – dinner on the deck, followed by marshmallows and drinks by a fire.

Here are some quick tips to ensure you’ll impress your family and friends this season!

1. Lighting

The sun is staying up longer and longer, but when the sun goes down, guests may think the party is over. Having plenty of lighting and ensuring it’s on before guests arrive will help keep the party going, even after dark.

Candles, and string lights create a warm ambiance and can be found at places like IKEA, without breaking the bank. Check them out here.

2. Bugs

There is nothing worse than spending the whole night slapping yourself silly as you get eaten alive by mosquitos. Citronella candles, and bug spray should always be on hand to help ward them away. You can also consider planting citronella, lavender, rosemary and basil near your entertaining space.

3. Supplies

Keep your supplies close. Running back and forth to the kitchen to grab things you forgot can get old quickly. Fill a tray with key items that you think you’ll need throughout the night: utensils, napkins, bottle opener, condiments, candles and more and save yourself the trips.

Melamine/plastic plates and glasses are nice to have on hand, so you don’t have to worry about things getting broken on the deck. When it’s sandal season, the last thing you want is broken glass near bare feet. We purchased ours years ago at Target, but sadly Target is no more. You can likely find options at Walmart or Home Sense/Marshalls.

4. Hot or cold

The afternoon sun can be hot hot hot, but when the sun goes down, it can get a little chilly. It’s good to have options for your guests so they’re always comfortable. Umbrellas, or a shady place to sit, is a great way to keep everyone safe from the sun’s harmful rays. At night time, have blankets on hand so everyone can stay cozy. We purchased these blankets from IKEA for only $2.99 each! They are the perfect size and roll up so they store nicely. And the price can’t be beat!

Now, let’s bring on that warm weather! I can’t wait to have friends over and enjoy our new backyard space!
